BuSpar (Buspirone) warnings. You should not take buspirone if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), a type of drug used for treating depression. Examples of MAOIs include phenelzine (Nardil) and tranylcypromine (Parnate). Taking buspirone with MAOIs can cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure. Research has shown that the safety of buspirone does not vary by age. For short-term use (no more than six weeks), it’s as safe in people 65 and older as in other adults and in children six to 17. However, long-term safety of buspirone in children is unknown.
